Digital Detox di Tengah Jam Kerja: Kebiasaan Kecil yang Menyelamatkan dari Burnout

Have you ever been deep in focus at work, when suddenly a WhatsApp notification pops up? You only meant to check it for a second, but before you know it, you’ve spent 15 minutes scrolling through TikTok?

In this digital-driven work era, our eyes are practically "glued" to screens for 8 hours (or even more). It feels like there’s no room to breathe. If left unchecked, the fatigue isn't just physical—your mental health takes a hit too, leading straight to burnout.

But here’s the good news: you don’t need to quit your job and move to the mountains to find peace. You can do a "mini" digital detox right in the middle of your workday. Here are a few small habits that can save your mental well-being:

1. The "Change of Scenery" Ritual Every 20 Minutes

Our eyes weren't designed to stare at smartphone screens non-stop. Try the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and stare at something about 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds. Sounds simple, right? But it works wonders to keep your eyes relaxed and your brain from "overheating."

2. Dare to Turn Off Unnecessary Notifications

Be honest: do you really need to know about food discounts or see your high school friend’s status update in the middle of work? Go to your phone settings and mute non-essential entertainment apps. Let your phone stay "silent" for a while. By cutting out those ping! distractions, you can focus better and get your work done faster.

3. Lunch Without a "Screen Buddy"

Be real—who here eats with a spoon in their right hand and scrolls through social media with their left? Starting tomorrow, try leaving your phone at your desk when you go to lunch. Actually taste your food, chat with a colleague, or just stare at a tree outside. This is a crucial "reset" moment for your brain to prevent sensory overload.

4. Back to Pen and Paper

Every now and then, when you need to make a to-do list or just brainstorm some ideas, try using a physical notebook. There’s a calming sensation when a pen touches paper that you just can't get from typing on your phone's Notes app. Plus, it’s the most effective way to give your eyes a break from screen radiation.

5. Don’t Check Your Phone Right When You Wake Up

This is the hardest but most powerful habit. If you check emails or news the second you open your eyes, your stress levels spike before your day even begins. Give yourself at least 15–30 minutes to stretch or drink some water without any digital interruptions.

Keep in mind: Digital detox doesn’t mean you’re anti-technology. It’s just a way to ensure you are the one in control of technology, not the other way around.

Burnout is real, but preventing it starts with these small, simple steps. Let's start slow, starting today!
